Smaug is so physically different from me that much of what people witness in his final performance is the work of the incredible team at Weta Digital. My face isn’t that of a dragon, so the performance that I offered was something which was translated, augmented and adjusted onto the scaly head of an air-liner-sized beast. It was the inspiration that initiated the process of animation. And now, having been through this process, I know I can take pride in seeing the most important elements of my characterization translated by those amazing artists onto a very inhuman form. Everyone knows I played Smaug, but the truth is that thousands of people have spent thousands of hours creating this marvel of cinema. He is removed from how I walk about in life and while I love being a character actor, there’s nothing that I could do that could touch the magic of what Weta Digital has brought to him on top of what I gave them as ideas. It was a beautiful collaboration.
Greek Benedict: "I used to come here as a kid as well, so I caught up with some old friends. I have like a Greek family here, old and young people my age and people my parent’s age because I used to holiday here with them when I was a child, so yeah, it’s very familiar." x
I really had BRILLIANT time in Australia and Oz Comic Con. Not only because I met B and he recognized my work but also I felt really blessed to see his kindness, generosity, patience, cheekiness and humor with my own eyes. Also i had great time meeting lots of lovely fellow cumbercollective. Thanks again B, you will continue to inspire me in many ways, love you, never change!!
